Occasionally Asked Questions
Q: Are you playing with a band on your songs?
A: Mostly no as of late. I ordinarily write, record and play all the instruments in the songs you hear. But I've certainly collaborated with some great musicians over the years and that's noted where the songs are listed. I would love to be in a band again one day, hopefully soon...
Q: I'm confused. Aren't you ASK? After all, your website is asktunes.com.
A: I was ASK, which stood for Angel Sophia Krasnegor, in my previous incarnation. But now I've reverted to the original LaCanfora. I promise not to change it again regardless what happens.
Q: So you're also an artist?
A: Yes, I make mosaics.
Q: How long have you been playing music and writing songs?
A: It's been quite a long time now. At the risk of revealing my age, let's just say that when I started, skinny ties and shoulder pads were all the rage.
Q: Are you after fame and fortune?
A: Oh, frick no. I play because I love it. I have to. It's absolutely essential to my well-being. I would love it though if people wanted to cover my songs (hint...hint...)
Q: Has success gone to your head?
A: I'm sorry, were you talking to me?
Q: Where have you performed?
A: Let's see...scores of bars and coffehouses in my native state of California, like McCabe's Guitar Shoppe in Santa Monica, the Kibbitz Room in Hollywood, and Sacred Grounds in San Pedro, Mugs Away Saloon in Laguna Niguel (where they hold the annual "Mooning of Amtrak").Various clubs and pubs in England and Ireland. A disability rights conference in Maryland, Rapunzel's here in Virginia and many more venues to come soon!
Q: What do you get when no three positive integers a, b, and c can satisfy the equation an + bn = cn for any integer value of n greater than two?
A: You get Fermat's Last Theorem.
Q: I thought you hated math?
A: I do.

My passions are equally divided these days between making mosaic art and making music. A little about my musical history: While the Beatles drew me into music initially as a kid, I quickly graduated to the harder stuff. Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, Robyn Hitchcock and the inimitable Bob Dylan have thus wound up being the most profound influences on my own music. I just adore music though, regardless of genre. You will find, listening to my tunes here, that I'm not afraid to jump ship in regards to genre. You'll find examples of folk, folk rock, pop, punk, bluegrass, blues, whatever, I haven't been shy about exploring my musical landscapes. But while I've written songs running the gamut of genres, my favorite genre has to be psychedelic folk-rock. While acoustic guitar is my main instrument, I also play bass, mandolin, keyboards, harmonica & shiny red bongos.
What I've been listening to and digging as of late: the wonderful new album from the Young Fresh Fellows, "I Think This Is," and my pals from nearby Richmond, Virginia, Blue Line Highway's "A Perfect Curve."
I generally like to tell people I'm from L.A., as I was born in Glendale and lived a good portion of my adult life there. But in actuality, I was raised in the O.C., back in the day when nobody called it "the O.C." Specifically, I grew up in Surf City, that is, Huntington Beach. I moved to lovely Charlottesville, Virginia in '07.
I’ve been musically inclined all my life. It helped that my dad was a singer who was signed to Liberty Records in the 1960s and worked alongside many musical luminaries who were based in L.A. in that era. I took up piano at age 9, and guitar around 12, and started writing songs around then. I studied classical guitar at the now defunct Antmann School of Music when I was a teenager...played in the high school band.
I’ve been in many bands over the years, including:
Out of the Blue
The Blue Silhouttes
Into the Light
Voodoo Fungus
Cowboy Buddha
Sheer Zed
Desert Sage (not a member, just a collaborator)
The Learning Lovers Project
(my experimental Internet band)
I’ve released five self-published cds of mostly original material to date. These are:
Sleepy Monster Goals (2000)
Steep Ramp Absolutely (2001)
The Grevillea Home Collection (2002)
Enigmatic Cover Shot (2003)
A.S.K. (2006)
Songwriting really is my big love, followed by recording in my studio. I enjoy performing occasionally as well, but typically when I'm with a band.
I have always enjoyed taking pictures and you can check those out here at my Flickr page.
Thanks for stopping by! Make yourself at home and stay awhile...
